Subject: NNN Another Frosty February? News and Events for Feb 2021
From: Northwest Neighbors Network

Hello NNN members, friends, and families:
Where were you two years ago when we had the frosty February? Forecasters are predicting more, so let's be prepared with some things to take our minds off the weather.
  • Reminder: Inclement Weather Policy
  • Ready to Launch a New Current Events Group
  • Talks-Who is this TED, and why do we talk about this on Thursdays?
  • Volunteers Ready to Help With Vaccine Appointments
  • Let's Escape to a Dutch Museum
  • SuperHero Third Place Commons Online Event - Feb 24
  • Seattle: The Beautiful City
  • Volunteers Forum - Feb 24

Inclement Weather Safety Policy
To ensure the safety of our members and volunteers, our policy follows what local school districts publish:
  • When area schools are closed, NNN is also closed. Please monitor your local radio, news or school websites to determine if schools are open.
  • Some part of our service area can be more adversely affected than others. So If a volunteer or member believes that it is not safe to travel, the service needs to be rescheduled.
  • Volunteers and members are encouraged to contact one another whenever they are concerned about the weather forecast and make contingency plans.
  • If no plan is in place, volunteers and members should contact one another as soon as they learn that they are not able to get out.

Ready to Launch a New Group with Us? NNN current events group?

Jerry Carriveau, NNN‘s board Vice President, is proposing a current events group to be held on Zoom weekly.

This group would try to stay away from inflammatory political articles and concentrate on art, culture, scientific developments, journalistic work, etc.
(Maybe this week we can talk about the Texas lawyer who had a kitten filter in place of his own face on a Zoom call, and you'll know why the phrase, "I am not a cat" is spreading across social media.)

TED Talk Speaker
TED Talks - Do You Need to Be a "Techie" to Enjoy?

No! It's all about people across the globe sharing ideas and having conversations about what they learned. If you want to join this week's NNN group, we meet at 4 PM every Thursday on Zoom. Join us TODAY!

How did it get started? TED is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100 languages.

What is TED? This primer of 11 classic TED Talks shows you the wide range of topics covered:

Something New:
TED Circles is an open community of small groups that engage in conversations about big ideas. Hosted by volunteers, Circles watch and discuss a TED Talk about a monthly theme. They share takeaways online to consider each other’s perspectives and create a global conversation. https://www.tedcircles.com/#current-circle-talks

Tired of Trying to Get a Vaccine Appointment?

Wonder Woman

Third Place Commons Book Reality Event

Since their debut in the 1930s, comic books have been a regular part of our pop-culture landscape. While often dismissed as escapist entertainment, these pulp treasures also provide a fascinating lens through which to view our nation’s past, present, and potential future.

On Wednesday, February 24th at 7 PM, Third Place Commons invites you to explore the impact and significance of these potent images and stories in “Comic Book Reality: Superheroes & the Power of Representation.” Follow the link to sign up.

"Seattle: The City Beautiful"

February 19, 2021 @ 12:00 noon – 1:30pm

The Woman’s Century Club invites you to a free online presentation by local architectural historian and preservationist Lawrence Kreisman. This talk will cover the fascinating history of the Seattle area’s ambition to be an innovative, beautiful and livable metropolitan area.

Learn about how tycoons, utopians and the famed Olmsted Brothers put their stamp on the development of neighborhoods, parks, transit and communities such as Lake Forest Park and The Highlands.

Volunteers Forum - Save the Date
Last month, we kicked off a volunteer-suggested forum where NNN volunteers could ask questions, get input, share ideas. We're ready for our next open forum, so please plan to attend!
