NNN Hosting Oct 15 Event with Dr. Vin Gupta
The COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc on everyone’s lives, with seniors profoundly affected. What have we learned so far? How have we adjusted, and how can we best prepare to protect our health and safety as winter approaches? Dr. Robin Fleming, Assistant Teaching Professor at the University of Washington Bothell, and board member of Northwest Neighbors Network, will have a conversation with Dr. Vin Gupta, Affiliate Assistant Professor of Health Metrics Sciences at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington about how the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the landscape of health care, public health communications and the implications this has for seniors.

This will be a Town Hall format, with Dr. Fleming moderating a Q & A session between participants and Dr. Gupta. This event will be ASL interpreted and captioned.

Send questions in advance to NNN Director, Dr. Fleming, at fleming9@uw.edu. This event is co-sponsored by Northwest Neighbors Network and the University of Washington, Bothell.

Plastic Bag Ban
October 1 = Bring Your Own Bags (or Pay)
Long in the works, and delayed due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Washington State ban on single-use plastic bags is here. Studies indicate those in Washington State were using over 2 billion single-use bags per year, and this legislation is to reduce that impact on our environment.

So, what kind of bags will you be charged for, and how much will they cost?
You’ll pay at least eight cents for large paper bags, such as the handled kind that have already replaced plastic at some grocery stores, and thicker, reusable plastic bags. In both instances, these bags must meet a threshold of post-consumer recycled content. (Compostable bags are permitted, but retailers can choose whether to charge the customer.) Oh, and YES, if you pick up food to go from a restaurant, those single use bags are also part of this law.

What about produce bags?
Exempted from the fee structure are plastic produce bags, often used for bulk food or to cover meat packaging, and small paper bags like lunch sacks.

What About Your Own Bags?
These are free to use, so dust off your favorite cloth bags or totes, and remember to bring them in the store with you! Maybe this is a great project for those who love to sew?

Ice Cream Social a Huge Hit!

Thanks to each of our volunteers for setting up and scooping and helping - what a great opportunity to thank all of our Members and Volunteers who help our NNN community stay active and engaged! With the generous donation of ice cream and treats from the Ballinger Way Thriftway and the gorgeous weather, we look forward to the next celebration.

Members Only: What's Next? Docent Tour

If you're an NNN Member, be sure to sign up for the Dunn Gardens docent-led tour on October 22. We have room for only six people, and two spots are already gone!

Questions? Contact our Social Team, or register on the Events page to Register Now (and also Request Transportation if you need it).

Yes, we can add an additional tour date if we have more people who would like to take part. This is one of the types of outings suggested by our members during our annual survey to get more input on what makes their social lives more enriching. We love it when we can take suggestions and turn them in reality.
