Social Committee News from September

September was a good beginning for Northwest Neighbors Network members and volunteers to meet up and make new acquaintances.    NNN offered twenty-six (26) separate social activities in September for those who wished to participate.

Keep on Walking!

Continued thanks to our volunteer walk leaders, Margaret Houghtaling, Anne Guthrie and Sandy Moy for keeping the momentum of NNN walks. Kudos to our most intrepid walkers, Margaret Houghtaling and Sandy Moy who each participated in 14 separate walks! In September, 18 walks were offered.  No need to register! If you want to be sure someone will be there to walk with you, check out the Events page on our website to confirm if any times, days or locations have changed.

Lunching Together!

We hosted one group lunch in September at the Diamond Knot Brewpub in Mountlake Terrace followed by a brief post lunch brewery tour for those interested. Food and company were most enjoyable. Some of us indulged and shared a delicious 7 layer chocolate cake while another enjoyed a most scrumptious ice cream sundae. Looks good, doesn’t it?

The next lunch is on Friday, November 5th at Claire's Pantry, 301 Main Street, Edmonds, WA  98020  Phone: 425-776-2333. Marty Behnke is our host.

Meet at 1:00 as usual. Registration not required. Open to all.

We’ve heard that it would be helpful if we can plan lunches with pricing that is more budget friendly. It sure seems like the average cost of lunch has gone up this past year! Ideas and suggestions for affordable and tasty places to eat are very welcome. To keep our lunch and visit Fridays going, we need volunteers to help host.  It’s easy, and we’ll help you every step of the way. The best thing about being a host? YOU get to pick the restaurant and YOU get to meet everyone! If you’re willing and able to help, please contact social@northwestneighborsnetwork.org today!

Celebrating Together!

Thanks to everyone who joined us at Edmonds City Park on September 25th for our fall celebration of NNN Members & Volunteers! The weather was perfect as 37 of us enjoyed each other’s company, met new friends, played lawn games and tickled our taste buds with ice cream sundaes, root beer floats, cake and cookies. Special thanks to everyone who loaned their lawn chairs, coolers, tables and extra hands throughout the celebration! We couldn’t have done it without you!!! Thanks, too, to our local Ballinger Thriftway Market for donating all of the delicious ice cream! If you’d like to view a slideshow of the day, please click here

NNN Reads!

The NNN book club, led by volunteer Eileen Carter, meets via Zoom on the 4th Monday of each month. Eight readers enjoyed discussing "Sorry I'm Late, I Didn't Want to Come: An Introvert's Year of Living Dangerously," by Jessica Pan for September’s meeting. Join them as they discuss "The Four Winds"  by Kirstin Hannah in October. For more information please contact info@NorthwestNeighborsNetwork.org.

Chatting Together

Monday afternoons from 4:00-5:00 are set aside for NNN members, volunteers and guests to check in by Zoom with each other to stay in touch. No need to register! Just pop in and join us! Zoom link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/2532372848?pwd=RmlBTUlCQWI1ZHpzZ2ExQ25ramRFUT09 or call: 253 215-8782

Enjoy Opera?

NNN will once again meet at the Regal Cinema in Northgate for select performances of the Met's 2021-22 season. As a courtesy to the host, please send an email to social@northwestneighborsnetwork or call 253-237-2848 to let us know you're planning to attend. We will wear masks and remain socially distanced in the cinema. If we're not comfortable with the theater's attention to Health & Safety protocols based on the number of attendees, we'll decide if we want to proceed or abandon the performance. Everyone will pay for their own ticket at the box office before meeting in the lobby.

October 23rd, 2021: The first opera, "Fire Shut Up in My Bones" is a contemporary opera composed by Terrance Blanchard. Read a synopsis here. Meet in the lobby by 9:35. The performance begins at 9:55 and lasts approximately 3 hours and 15 minutes with a 30 minute intermission.

Welcome New Faces in September!

Volunteers:

Austin Breuer (driving down from Everett to provide services to our members), Kate Gariando (working full time and still finding time to volunteer), Sharon Link (participating in NNN walks for the past year and now helping NNN set up new activities), Kathy Schoenbaum (volunteering for many organizations and now adding NNN to the list), and Jenn Tennet (the new NNN consultant who is willing to drive members to have ice cream)

Full Service Members:

Sharon Hager (already enjoying NNN walks), Sharon Johnson (recommended NNN to someone who also joined this month) , Adrian Kalar (a household member with BJ Bellizzi, who joined last month), Barbara Morgridge (found us by talking with Pam Jensen, one of our very first volunteers), and Elise Nesbitt (who joined the last day of the month at the recommendation of her mother)[Sounds like one of those word puzzles:which Sharon is related to which new member?]

Departures:

Rick Berlin has put a pause on volunteering for NNN as he starts a new job, and also moved into a new home up north.  We are hoping he will find time for us as he settles in.
Laura White moved far away to take care of family members.  She was a volunteer with us a short time, but we enjoyed her enthusiasm and compassion for others.
Lavina Barnes, who joined as a member last year, passed away in September.  She was always thoughtful of others and had a great laugh.  She was grateful to have been able to meet her new grandson and to have had the support of NNN volunteers.  Those of us who got to know her are grateful for having her in our lives.
