Subject: NNN Feb. Member & Volunteer News: Love as a Bridge
From: Northwest Neighbors Network

Vision of Northwest Neighbors Network:

Welcoming, intergenerational neighborhoods where seniors get the support they need to live in the comfort of their own homes and are engaged in community life.

Love as a bridge

"Even now," she thought, "almost no one remembers Esteban and Pepita but myself. Camilla alone remembers her Uncle Pio and her son; this woman, her mother. But soon we shall die and all memory of those five will have left the earth, and we ourselves shall be loved for a while and forgotten. But the love will have been enough; all those impulses of love return the love that made them. Even memory is not necessary for love. There is a land of the living and a land of the dead and the bridge is love, the only survival, the only meaning." [Thornton Wilder, "Bridge of San Luis Rey," 1927]

At NNN, we agree that love can act as a bridge between friends and neighbors, creating connection, purpose and meaning. With the support of our dedicated volunteers and members, we work to be that bridge between our community of neighbors, locating the windy roads and straight shots that lead to a vast diversity of opportunity for connection within and between us.

In this issue sent to members and volunteers, we will hone in and talk about how we hope to strengthen and secure our NNN bridge of connection.

Many thanks to NNN volunteer, and certified Tiny Habits instructor, Cynthia Orr for leading us through our first TINY HABITS workshop! Participants enjoyed learning the ‘A,B,C’S’ of how to create new habits through small steps and celebrations to make great strides in how they approach their lives. It helped me get some desired order back into my life and feel good about it!” says Sharon. “I reconnected myself to myself!” said Carol who is getting more satisfaction just by doing her daily tiny habits. darci is finally starting to learn to play her Ukelele that had been sitting for years in its case; It just makes me so happy and proud of myself! The best part about this series is working with Cynthia, a dynamic and encouraging mentor, and being able to support each other as we learn. Learning together is certainly fun!

Cynthia has offered to lead another workshop if there’s interest. Please contact social@northwestneighborsnetwork.org for more information.

Suzy is conquering the paper monster with her new tiny habit! Look at that smile!

Members Sharing News

This is a piece written by Carol F. volunteer/member, sharing ideas how she's enriching her life by taking advantage of free on-line resources.

I've been enjoying some free Zoom presentations lately. Entertaining one hour treats with some much needed brain stimulation thrown in.

King County (KCLS) has been offering fun technology sessions. These are for older adults, by a professional that anyone can follow. She understands that everyone can learn “new tricks” and doesn't assume that just because we’re older we are necessarily uneducated technology users. Refreshing!

In one session we discovered the newest online resources for art and crafting. Am loving my free online and YouTube watercolor tutorials! Another was Augmented Reality (AR) using a smart phone. We had a "Live" demonstration using her cellphone of apps from museums, retail stores, and more. We saw her with different shades of lipstick and hair color, and "placed" IKEA furniture in her room. We walked around an Egyptian sarcophagus and then saw an x-ray view inside of the mummy. Loads of fun.

Next session: How Emerging Technologies Enhance Independent Living 2/16, 2pm

The Sno-Isle Library webinars have been about the Pacific Northwest I lived first hand through the 1962 Columbus Day Storm and it was scary intense in Burien. I now know more about the impact up and down the west coast of that record breaking storm. I didn’t know more than 11 billion board feet of timber was blown down in northern California, Oregon and Washington that day!  And the storm is a contender for the title of the most powerful extratropical cyclone recorded in the U.S. in the 20th century.

The Bellevue Art Museum shared interesting archeological finds from the recent Seattle Convention Center construction site and explained how Federal and State governments get involved when sites find buried items and architectural structures during construction excavation. More “paperwork” than being “Indiana Jones”.

For a change of pace, Verdant Health Commission in Snohomish County has been giving nutritional webinars for healthy living, with live cooking demonstration, Q & A, and follow up emails with recipes. Subjects for example have been hardy soups, mushrooms as protein, and extinguishing heartburn.

More upcoming events for me are from the Humanities Speakers Bureau are about early Seattle’s bootlegging history and development of mystery writing from Sherlock Holmes to today.

History, and art and tech, oh my! Where to next? I can't wait!

UWRA Panel discussion Feb 16: How Villages Operate and Who We Serve

NNN is taking part in a panel discussion hosted by University of Washington Retirement Association

https://www.washington.edu/uwra/events/

AGING IN COMMUNITY WITH NEIGHBORHOOD VILLAGES

Wednesday, February 16 | 11:00 am | REGISTER NOW (only 2 days left!)

Registration Required. Free Event.

Most of us want to maximize our ability to age in place in our homes. One way to do that is with the help of the supportive communities that are created by virtual villages. Villages are intergenerational organizations that provide resources, education, engagement and support to help people stay independent, active and connected for as long as possible. Representatives of five area villages will join us on Zoom for a discussion of who they serve and how they operate.

Bingo
DragQueen Bingo was a big hit!
8 NNN members came to the Shoreline/Lake Forest Park Senior Center for our first night time outing. Thanks to volunteer Rhonda Hill for suggesting and hosting this event! Members said they enjoyed the location, the food and, most of all, being able to get together! Bingo was fast paced, and most of us learned that BINGO has changed from days ago. One of our members was even a lucky BINGO winner! This was a fundraiser for the Shoreline/LFP Senior Center, and they anticipate holding Drag Queen Bingo once a month for the near future.
