Our NNN Board of Directors Needs YOU! (Or a Friend)

NNN is excited to announce that we are expanding our Board and seeking interested and enthusiastic Board members! This is a great time to join the team at NNN. In the last year, we doubled in size despite the pandemic. We are about to launch our next strategic plan, and we continue to strive to find ways to reach more members, volunteers and community partnerships in North King County and South Snohomish County.

The Board is a small but mighty team of individuals who are supportive, fun, and care deeply about our mission. We are looking for folks with expertise in legal compliance, fundraising and outreach, communications and technology, resources for seniors, and financial management, but we welcome other skill sets and relevant experience, as well! We hope to continue building NNN’s capacity for social engagement, and expand opportunities for members and volunteers. Additionally we have several opportunities behind the scenes to support program enrichment, such as organizational, research, communications and community engagement projects.

If you're interested, or would like to introduce us to someone who might be a great fit, please read the Board Recruitment flier and reach out to our Board President, Suzy Chandler, if you have questions: suzy@northwestneighborsnetwork.org.

NNN Picnic a Great Success

With a mighty core team led by darci, Danie, Marty, Mel, Anne, and Sharon, 36 volunteers supported the planning, food management, transportation, member outreach, community outreach/raffle and day-of-event activities of the NNN Picnic so that 85 NNN Neighbors could come out to celebrate! We even got a break in the weather to enjoy the togetherness of our NNN community.

Between the local ukulele group, the visit from the Shoreline Fire Mobile Integrated Health team, and the ability to gather together and share old stories and new stories and make new connections, we can all hardly wait for the next get together!

We wish to send a special thank you out to the following local establishments that donated in-kind gifts for our raffle: Third Place Books (Lake Forest Park), Woods Coffee (Edmonds), Suniś Restaurant (Shoreline), Hops & Drops (Lynnwood), Cafe Louvre (Edmonds), CedarSchemes (Lake Forest Park) and Lake Forest Park Bar & Grill.

If you're a member or volunteer, watch for a separate insider-view edition of our news to see the great photos and hear about the prize winners. If you're looking into joining our NNN family, volunteers and members are always welcome!

Member Profile: Meet Susanna and Michael

My husband Michael and I are new to Washington State. We had retired to Montpelier, VT, to be near our son and his family, who subsequently moved to Washington State. They warned us this might happen and I said, “No problem, I’m a Methodist minister’s daughter, I can move.” (31 times.) We came out to join them last year.

But this was a hard move. My husband has dementia and I had a knee replaced six weeks before the move. Family couldn’t come to help because of Covid quarantines, and I was still recovering from a serious and debilitating bout with Covid 19.

But here we are, and we love it.
Susanna and Michael

Our daughter-in-law found us a lovely home in a 16-unit condo community in Edmonds, facing a lovely green space with beautiful plantings. “The long dark” of this winter was good compared to -20 degree weather and persistent ice. The spring is incredibly lovely. Covid spikes have made it slow to make connections and NNN has been really helpful in getting me connected to fun events and people. We feel settled. Unfortunately our landlord just called to say she is selling the condo, so we’ll see what's next for us.

We are in our mid-seventies. I was a United Church of Christ Pastor for 37 years, serving churches in Vermont, Massachusetts and Connecticut. But Vermont was our home base. Michael was a clinical social worker with a private psychotherapy practice, and a sign of true love is that he set up new private practices four times, following me from church to church. Luckily, he was very good at his work, and he loved me.

We were married in October 1969 and our only child, Zachary, was born in October 1970. We moved to Brattleboro VT in 1971, sight unseen for me. We raised Zak and a big garden. We have two grandchildren, Max & Naomi, and we are so glad to be near them again.
I have always been heavily involved in social service. My husband has been an elite athlete in his spare time, soccer, skiing, pickleball, climbing, and we camped a lot. But we are mostly homebodies now. Michael has two kinds of dementia, vascular dementia and a rarer kind of front temporal dementia which is more like Parkinson’s or ALS. He needs to sleep a lot, two hours down, two up. He still has his intellect, he still plays chess online, and he is still unfailingly kind. His balance is bad, and he shakes a lot and mostly lives in his bathrobe and Lazy Boy. But he is still intellectually curious, studying birds, and local conifers and whatever Zak’s family is into.

We feel very lucky that he is still himself, we live near family, we have good insurance, and we’ve loved each other for fifty-four really good years. That’s a lot of practice in working things out. We are a very close family and we talk to our brothers in Massachusetts frequently. I do lots of word games and am especially into Spelling Bee in the NYT. I read a lot and like to cook. And now I volunteer at NNN, mostly calling members (you’ll probably hear from me sometime.) I am also going to help with writing and may be calling to see if any of you would like to be interviewed so I can write your profile.
Thank you for being NNN. You have been a godsend to me. I look forward to getting to know you better. You have made a big difference.
