Message from Suzy Chandler, Board President

It’s hard to believe September is just around the corner! It feels like back to school time for your NNN Board as well, as we dive in and make progress on our strategic planning areas. We continue to appreciate all of our volunteers fulfilling our member requests and services and making a great NNN community as we focus on our ongoing growth. What are we working on right now?

  • The website refresh team is updating content, and we’re looking for more photos of daily interactions in our community. (Yes, you can share your favorites!)

  • The Outreach team is gearing up to take part in the Fair on 44th on September 10th in Lynnwood and the Annual Holiday Bazaar at the Shoreline/Lake Forest Park Senior Center on October 21/22. We also have new relationships with Hero’s Cafe (devoted to helping Veterans gather and share stories each month) as well as Volunteers of America Western Washington.

  • Our biggest focus now is to expand our Board. We need community members excited about helping seniors by becoming part of our Board.  If you have the ability and passion to support NNN’s mission, we ask you to consider exploring a position with our Board. (Check the announcement from our website, and contact Board President, Suzy, to express interest or to suggest potential nominees. Email suzy@northwestneighborsnetwork.org)

Member Profiles: Robert & Madeleine Kaiser-Butty

Robert and Madeleine were both born before World War II; Robert in Strasbourg, France and Madeleine in Fribourg in the French part of Switzerland.

Robert’s family emigrated to the United States in 1942 as refugees fleeing Nazi persecution. He was raised in New York City. His primary education was obtained in the NYC public education system; his secondary education followed at the Lycée Français de New York.  After receiving a French Baccalaureate from the Lycée, Robert obtained his technical education at MIT, where he received his undergraduate and graduate degrees in Chemical Engineering. He was a National Science Foundation Fellow from 1956 to 1960. After graduating from MIT, Robert served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, stationed at the Quartermaster Research and Development Command, Natick, MA. In addition to his duties as a Research Officer, he was also tasked by the Command to provide interpretation/translation services for distinguished French visitors.

After graduating from high school in Switzerland, Madeleine spent a year as an au-pair in England to perfect her English. Madeleine eventually emigrated to Boston, MA in 1968 as a temporary resident when USM, the American Company she worked for in Fribourg transferred its operations to the U.S. She planned to return to Switzerland after a few years, but these plans changed when she met Robert.

Robert and Madeleine were married in 1970. They moved from Cambridge, MA to Winchester, MA in 1974 after their son, Pierre, was born. His sister, Martine, followed a few years later.

Robert initially worked in industry, first for the M.W. Kellogg Company in Piscataway, NJ as a research engineer, and then for AVCO Systems Division in Lowell, MA, where he did some pioneering work in nanotechnology. After becoming a Registered Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and a dozen years as an employee, he hung out his own shingle and became a consulting engineer in 1974. This initial effort led to the creation of <ARGOS> Associates, Inc., a consulting company in 1977, and of Entropic Systems, Inc., a technology development enterprise in 1985.

Between being a mother, working for the Canadian Consulate in Boston, supporting her husband’s business operations, and being an active volunteer in the Friends of the Winchester Library and the local chapter of the League of Women Voters, the Winchester years were busy ones for Madeleine.

They became empty nesters after their children had graduated from college and moved to the Pacific Northwest. In 2009, they emulated them and moved from the East Coast to Edmonds, which they now call home. After they moved to Edmonds, Madeleine remained active in the Friends of the Library and League of Women Voters for about ten years until it became time for her to fully retire. Robert remains active as a Consulting Engineer, and in helping Northwest Neighbors Network with grant writing support when required.

Madeleine and Robert have been involved with NNN for nearly a year. ¨We are so very fortunate we found NNN. It changed everything and allowed us to remain at home, in our community and together.¨

Social Spotlight: NNN’s Book Club

Submitted by Eileen C., Host

NNN started a Book Club in our early days, way back before the pandemic started. We gleefully met in person then, enjoying each other’s company on a member’s deck. We now meet on Zoom, but we’re still gleeful! We have a core group of about 7-8 people, but we’ve been known to reach 12 participants.

Members choose our books, then we meet from 1 – 2:30 on the 4th Monday of every month. We read all sorts of fiction and non-fiction and lean toward books easily accessible at the library. Who needs more stuff? Books are often picked up and delivered to members, then returned after our meeting. We have books selected through next January, but if you’d like to join and suggest one, please contact Eileen Carter at iseacarter@frontier.com. We can be flexible with scheduling our reading choices!

We all look forward to meeting in person again soon, Omicron-variant-willing. Till then, join us on Zoom at this link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/2532372848?pwd=RmlBTUlCQWI1ZHpzZ2ExQ25ramRFUT09

Check us out with no obligation to join!

Editor’s Note: Eileen has been a volunteer with Northwest Neighbors Network for almost 4 years and has a passion for reading. In addition to her many other volunteer services with NNN, she turned her passion for reading and conversation into action when she became our Book Club host. We are so thankful for her generous gift of time and energy! To learn more about becoming a host for a social event or activity, please contact Social@NorthwestNeighborsNetwork.org.

September Topic: All things transportation! Do you drive members? Want to know more about driving for NNN? Have tips to share or questions to ask?  Join us for the NNN Volunteer team Transportation meeting. We will cover a quick refresher of the rules/processes, share tips and tricks from veteran volunteers, typical issues that come up, what you have heard from members regarding transportation, asking for help, thinking about ways to cover the need; volunteers for backups and for quick response (run to pharmacy, take to a lab, take to urgent care).

Danie B. hosts two different sessions to make attending convenient for all volunteers. These twice monthly meetings focus on the same topic, and you're welcome to attend both if you'd like to hear what others have to say. All volunteers are encouraged to join so we hear and learn from many perspectives. All NNN virtual and in-person meetings are opportunities to foster personal connections between volunteers and hear the latest team updates. Please plan to attend one or both discussions!

To join either session, follow this link to the event or paste this URL into your web browser:

Reminder: NNN is Looking for Recipes to Share!

Do you have a favorite recipe? Whether it’s your own creation or one you’ve used over the years, please share! We’d like to create our own NNN Community Cookbook in time for the winter holidays. Thanks to those who submitted a recipe already. Do it now while you’re thinking about it. Please send your recipe(s) to Social@NorthwestNeighborsNetwork.org by October 31, 2022.

Your NNN Social Committee Wants to Hear from You!

darci B. Chair, Social Committee

NNN Members and Volunteers are what make our NNN community so special. Many thanks to those of you who’ve offered ideas about what you’d like to do, learn about, and where you’d like to visit. We always try to accommodate your ideas and weave them into the fabric of our NNN activities as best we can.

We want our NNN community to reflect your interests. We’re already starting to plan for 2023. Please help guide us in the direction you’d like to go. We’re happy to hear from you by email at Social@NorthwestNeighborsNetwork.org.

Tip #1: You can also add your interests to your NNN Member profile. Simply sign into the website at Member Login at the upper right-hand corner. Click on the drop-down arrow for Profile and then scroll down to the bottom of the page. Look for this box and click on Interests:

Don’t miss out! Check all things that you think you’d like to know about when we offer an activity in those categories. If you don’t see something you’d like, please add it or contact Social@NorthwestNeighborsNetwork.

Tip #2: The more advance notice we have about something you’d like to do, the more likely we’ll be able to find another NNN member or two with similar interests who may want to participate. And always remember to check our Events calendar on the website at least once a week to see what’s happening.

Birthdays in September

Join us in wishing our NNN members and volunteers born in September a very happy birthday month! We hope each of you finds something that makes you smile, as we smile with you.

Happy Birthday to:

darci B, Nancy C, Nor F, Steven G, Christina J, Joan L, Dot M, Mary M, Elaine M, Ursula R, Marisa S, George S, Kaleb S, Mike W, Tom W, Michelle W

Member Advice & Tips

-A few tips recommended by Colleen L.

1) Veterinarian services are out of control and unrealistic for many of us seniors. An emergency leaves us stranded with no available help! I've availed myself of this wonderful foundation's kindness and want to share it because they focus specifically on seniors who have pets and realize the difficulty in paying exorbitant rates for their beloved pet's care. The foundation can be accessed on the Internet: ¨Budkis FoundationThey are wonderful and very understanding & compassionate.

2) Wal-Mart offers prescriptions and vaccines for just $4. Just had my second dose of Shingles vaccine today as well as this year's Flu shot. Total bill? $4. If you're over 65, PLEASE get your Shingrix vaccine. It's 2 doses. For one who has suffered through Shingles.... Trust me, you do NOT want this illness. It's terribly painful.

3) And...a personal one to help us stay cool, safe and calm when the heat index rises like it has been lately: I fill my old red rubber hot water bottle and freeze it. If I MUST go out, I place it in a large plastic bag, and in the car, place it behind my lower back. Amazing how it cools your whole body for a long time.

  • Another option if you're staying in....have zip lock bags in both quart and gallon size handy. Wet hand towels, fold and put in gallon bags. Freeze. Use where needed. I use the lower back.

  • Use the quart bags in the same way, wet/freeze... but with wash rags. This is perfect for behind your neck!

  • Last but not least....a spray bottle set to 'mist'. It feels wonderful and can be sprayed on any body parts as desired or needed! Try it, you'll like it!
