 What Makes a Good Neighbor?

A good neighbor is someone you can borrow a cup of sugar from. Someone who waters your plants while you’re away. Someone who waves when you walk by or shares a cup of coffee on the porch. At its heart, being a good neighbor is about caring, connecting, and showing up.

National Good Neighbor Day

Back in 1978, President Jimmy Carter proclaimed September 28 as National Good Neighbor Day to inspire Americans to create stronger, healthier, and more connected communities. Different organizations suggest ways to celebrate: share a meal, send a handwritten card, or simply check in with someone who lives nearby. These are wonderful gestures—but we believe the spirit of being a good neighbor is something that should last all year long.
Neighbors Through the Years
I often think about my friend who was my neighbor more than 45 years ago. Our daughters grew up together, running back and forth between our homes. The girls hosted tea parties, while we moms exchanged gardening tips and shared countless cups of coffee.
We laughed, we leaned on each other, and we were always there when one of us needed a helping hand. That’s what true neighborliness looks like—and it’s a bond that still lasts to this day.
The NNN Difference
At Northwest Neighbors Network (NNN), we carry that same spirit into everything we do. Our volunteers are the “good neighbors” who show up day after day, week after week, year after year. Here are just a few ways they make a difference:
  • Giving rides to medical appointments so members don’t miss essential care.
  • Helping with grocery trips, errands, and even small household tasks.
  • Offering companionship at social events and gatherings, making sure no one feels left out.
  • Providing peace of mind for families, knowing their loved one has support close at hand.
These acts may seem simple, but they are life-changing. They reduce isolation, keep our members safe, and help seniors and adults with disabilities remain independent in their own homes—the place they know and love.
More Than a Holiday—A Way of Life
At NNN, we don’t just celebrate good neighbors one day a year. Our work is ongoing. Loneliness, lack of transportation, and daily challenges don’t take a holiday. Our volunteers step in where family members can’t always be there or when there are no family members. For many, NNN is more than a service—it’s a community, a lifeline, and a circle of neighbors who care.
Join Us in Building a Stronger Community
We are proud of our volunteers and grateful for every hour they give. But the truth is—we always need more helping hands and more neighbors willing to share their time, talents, and kindness.
You can make a difference too.
Volunteer a few hours a month to help a neighbor. Support our mission. Share our story with a friend who may need us—or want to join us. Together, we can make every day Good Neighbor Day.

Becky Highland: Traveler, Adventuress, History-Buff

Joie de vivre aptly depicts Becky’s approach to life, as her lived experiences prove. Marrakesh, Prague, and throughout Great Britain are among her international stomping grounds. At home, she has visited all but 7 of the 50 states.

Along the way, she has explored far and wide, climbing numerous mountain peaks, skiing, scuba-diving, and racing sports cars.

You can meet Becky at the NNN lunch events, or at the Richmond Beach monthly coffee gathering. Of course, you can also volunteer to help her with some transportation services. Becky would love to share her love of literature and history in conversation (she has an English Lit degree), or to talk about her travels.

Becky was born in Indiana in 1940, into a family of five siblings. After the war, they took over the family farm in Illinois, but her father was not cut out for a life of farming. When she was 12 years of age, the family moved to the Mount Baker neighborhood of Seattle. Her father supported the family through his work as an engineer with Boeing. She attended Franklin High School, and then Washington State University. She married and bore two children, but since 30 years of age, she has been single. She worked for the same company in various roles until retiring in 1999.

These days Becky spends time reading and quilting. Vision has been an issue for her since the early aughts, when she was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa. She needs large print and a magnifier to read books and articles, and some help with identifying colors and patterns while quilting. She remains gracious and undaunted despite these added encumbrances. She is engaging and vivacious, and I have been enriched through our time spent together. Becky has not been cheated at her turn at the plate.

By: Jack Hagel, NNN volunteer

Danielle and Lee dished up ice cream to show our appreciation for the volunteers who came to a gathering on August 1st.  We want to also acknowledge all who have contributed to NNN in this past year.  That includes all of our members, who bring ideas, stories, and companionship.  For all of you who are able to volunteer, we want to express our thanks.

Let’s start with the backroom, those who contribute their efforts to keeping NNN running: 662 hours in June, over 4,100 in the first half of the year.  Thanks to, darci, Katie, Ginger, Marsha, Carol, Rita, and Cindy. Plus a very hard working board that contributes around 450 hours a month.  And to the amazing service coordination crew: Jana, Marty, Lyn, Pat, Theresa, Rick, Sandy, (and Danielle) - who each month handle around 800 calls in and out, over 2,000 email messages, and text messages.

Members frequently express gratitude for the personal connections that are made during services.  For some members the personal connection is everything.  Every week members receive visits from Steve, Bruce, Nancy, Mary Ann, Anne, Leslie, Susan, Evelyn, Arnie, Hosung, Samarth, Andrew, Kendahl and Brian.

Special acknowledgement to those who keep other regularly scheduled events going, including: Jerry who hosts a weekly chat, Katie our NNN lunch host, and Sharon a twice-monthly games activity, Eileen for bookclub and now mahjong.

NNN group walks are back, thanks to Leslie, Lee, Suanna, and Jane!  We have three or four walks scheduled each week (meaning that we have 2-3 volunteer hosts for each of them), including the Tuesday walk that has been going continuously for almost 7 years, the last several for which Barbara has been the faithful host.

Walks with individual members have been diligently supplied by Brian for several years.  Until she moved away, Brian walked twice a week with a member who originally said she wanted only women volunteers, and once she gave Brian a trial, she would have no one else.

Housekeeping for those with physical constraints that prevent them from vacuuming or reaching spots down low and up high is provided by many.  Those who are scheduled weekly or bi-weekly Peggy (two members), Paul (where the fur flies), Lee, Lyn, Trish, Jamie (a twice weekly check-in), Jan (once a week for over two years), Beth, Sai, Barbara, Ginnise, Eileen,Suzanne, and Isa (who cleans for two members whenever she is home from WSU).

Faithfully taking garbage out, bringing garage cans in every week and/or picking up the mail: Anne, Paul, Brian, Pat, Kristi, Gloria, and Kirk.

And let’s not forget lawns! Anne, Lars, Paul, Evan, Harold, Rita, Arnie, Kevin, Vince do a bunch of outside work.

Steady drivers for events, lunches, and dialysis: Barbara, Gail, Harold, Barb, Kate, & Kristi. Stepping in when we need that one more driver: Patty, Lynn, Danita, Ro, Suzy, Sylvia, Dakota, Linda, Joan, Rose, Rebekah, and Danny.

Driving lots of services and hours every month: Steve, Eileen, Ellen, Amanda, Beth, Bruce, Connie, Lyn, Patti, Cindy, Paul, Ruth, Pat, and Kirk.
Driving to places none of us want to go (downtown Seattle, Bellevue): Eileen, Ellen, Kirk, Ruby, Dan

Special mention to Kristy, who always has two small children in tow.  Since NNN Insurance does not cover children going into homes or riding in cars with members during services, she has found a way to volunteer.  She goes shopping for members and delivers the food (the kids are a big help in the grocery store).

Regular shopping companions include Vibeke, Beth, Lindsey, Cindy, Lyn, Evelyn, Vince.

Rides to hair and nail salons by several volunteers and especially from Bruce, Beth, and Kim.

Constructing, assembling, and fixing: Rick, Arnie, Lars, Cheryl & Joe

Weekly check-ins and drives: Kim for two members, Jamie every week. Both since the fall of 2022.

Organizing, packing, and paperwork: Nancy weekly, Patti weekly, Sharon, Cheryl, Joe, Cindy (housework & chats included) Katy, Lars, Barbara, Christine, and Vibeke (gains confidence of the most reluctant downsizers).

Techies save members’ computers and brains, with lots of patience: Michael, George, Rob, Boib, Lana, and Lars.

All who make sure that we know what services they are doing and close out their requests shortly after completion (either by contacting NNN or doing it online in VSS).  Too many to name - THANKFULLY.

Those who do not have a lot of time to offer on a regular basis, but find ways to take a services… we could not function without you also.  Including Jennifer, who jumped right in and took many requests as soon as she arrived. Ruby, who joined to play mahjong and instead takes bunches of requests now and then. Ginger who cheerfully picks up sewing for members... and many who volunteer once in a while, somehow just when we need you!
As one member said: "My volunteer to help with trash and mail, Gloria, is an absolute sweetheart! She actually spends time visiting and chatting with me: when we first met I invited her to stay for tea and she accepted. Since I’m mostly housebound due to severe chronic illness, pleasant company is a huge gift."
In the first seven months of this year volunteers provided over 6,000 hours of these gifts!  Thank you one and all!
